Shimmering Light: Paperclip Nazis, Roswell, UFOs, and A Lost Race, with Author Walter Bosley

In early July 1947, something crashed at a ranch outside of Roswell, New Mexico—fast-forward 74 years later, and this single event has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, TV shows, and the inspiration for several movies. All the while, the answer to this mystery continues the remain elusive. Was it a UFO from another planet? A Top Secret military project? Or something else entirely?

Our guest for this episode is Walter Bosley, author of the book Shimmering Light: Lost In An MKULTRA House of Anu. Walter is a popular conspiracy author, researcher, and ex-Special Agent of various government-related organizations. He spent 19-years in national security, having been employed by the FBI, and the US Air Force where he also served as a Special Agent of the AFOSI (Air Force Office of Special Investigations). He also worked as a counterterrorism operational consultant for six years following his military service.

Walter is an avid investigator of historical occult mysteries, publishing not only non-fiction works, but also authoring multiple pulp fiction novels. He’s also been known to weave his research knowledge and past experiences into screenplays, and has himself made a couple of screen appearances, namely in the 2013 documentary, Mirage Men, and on History Channel’s Ancient Aliens.

We interviewed Walter on the topics covered in his book Shimmering Light: Project Paperclip, mysterious Nazi technology, the Roswell Incident, UFOs, and a lost race that went underground after a cataclysm event on Earth. Adding to the mystery, we are also introduced to Charles Bosley (Walter’s father), and his account of having participated in a rescue/recovery mission in another Roswell-type event that occurred underground near Winslow, Arizona in 1958—and where Charles encounter a civilization that went into hiding wanting nothing to do with us.

Speaking during our interview of his father’s recollection of the events that transpired during this rescue/recovery mission in 1958, Walter tells us:

“So the subject came up and that was when I first heard him tell the story of when he was in the Air Force in the late 50’s—he was in Alabama for some training. He and a couple of the guys he was training with were instructed that they had to go to [an] Air Force Base in Texas. So they get on a plane and leave Gunter AFB in Alabama, and they’re on their way to Texas.

However, somewhere over Mississippi the plane banks North, and out of the forward cabin of the aircraft, an intelligence officer comes out and informs them that they’re not going to Texas, but they’re actually going to Wright-Patterson in Ohio. When they get there (according to my dad’s story) they’re told about something that happened that crashed in 1947.

Now, remember: my dad is telling us this six years before the book, The Roswell Incident comes out and this really hits the public in a big way. I know Stanton Friedman and a couple of others were already looking into the issue during the 70’s, but it really didn’t hit the public in a big way until that book in 1980.

So [my father] is saying they’re told something that crashed in New Mexico (is how he put it) in 1947, and then they were told (according to my dad) that it had happened again, and they were being assigned to, essentially, a rescue operation. This time the crash had occurred and the pilot (or occupant/crewman) was essentially still alive, and it gets more interesting. The people from whom this craft came from, requested help in bringing their crewman back.

So, they are flown to Arizona—now this is 1958 when this allegedly happened, and he says they’re flown to Arizona somewhere East of Winslow, is how he put it. There they were part of this rescue operation and there, apparently, is a cavern system there, and they were in the caverns and he and another individual encountered people—human beings, but people that had been living in this subterranean cavern-world for a very long time. They have gone underneath when there was some type of surface cataclysm.

My father claims they were told that this craft had come from a civilization that shares this planet with us, and they primarily are subterranean—they’re under the surface. They’re in these vast areas under the surface of the Earth that are habitable, and that they’re human beings but their civilization advanced and developed separate from ours and that they allegedly want nothing to do with us, but they needed our help.

My dad told this story over the course of almost 40 years and I have no doubt, never had any doubt—that he was absolutely telling something that he had experienced (or at least believed he had experienced). Finally, after he passed away in 2008, some years after that I decided, I really need to dig into this story more. That, of course, resulted in the book Shimmering Light, and I attempted to do an objective honest investigation in which I present my dad’s story as he told it—as he firmly believed it was true.”

Expanding on this subterranean civilization that his father claimed to have encountered and who could they be, Walter offers the possibility that they may be the Tuatha Dé Danann:

The Tuatha Dé Danann as depicted in John Dunca’s “Riders of the Sidhe” (1911)

“When you go back to the work of Jacques Valleé in the 80’s he mentions them, and this is one of the sources of the idea of ultraterrestrials in Ufology—the idea that there is somebody other than extraterrestrials to explain the otherwise unexplainable UFOs. Valleé himself was seeing signs and circumstantial evidence of the fairy lore, and what I mean by that is, for centuries human cultures had these beings that they referred to as the fairy people—these inter-dimensional beings that coexist in this world with us. The Tuatha Dé Danann, famously in Celtic lore, are representative of this.

But originally, there is an anthropological explanation for them that a lot of people like to rely on, but when you go to the original arrival of the Tuatha Dé Danann, they come out of the sky and they land on a mountain in ancient Ireland with great clouds and fury—what does that sound like? It sounds like they’re coming out of the sky from space in some type of craft. They’re technologically advance, they’re initially met with resistance, but they squash that resistance, and then they immediately befriend the ancient Irish folks that they encountered.

They’re all tied-in with this idea of developing human society and civilization technologically and such. This really resonates with the theme of Quetzalcoatl, and Viracocha: in this culture that would show up in ancient human civilizations and teach them advance agriculture, military technology, astronomy, and stuff like that—cultures around the world have stories of this.

What’s interesting is, one scholar has pointed out that at the time the Tuatha Dé Danann depart from Ireland, a very similar group with very similar activity appears in Central and Latin America, and then when they disappear from there, they reappear back in the Celtic lands.

So it looks like this group (which might have originally come from space) comes here and goes around the world bringing humanity up to a higher level of civilization and technology and intelligence—and there’s nothing that says they ever actually left. There’s all sorts of interesting lore all around the world to suggest that they’re still with us, and that they may be the ones who show up at certain times in these mysterious crafts and make their presence known, and possibly have left their presence in the mysterious megaliths and other clues to a lost civilization.

Not long after arriving, the Tuatha Dé Danann would befriend and make allies [of] the earthly human tribes that they encountered, and those cultures would then kind of come together the banner of the Tuatha Dé Dannan and when you hear about the battles and the defeat of the Tuatha Dé Dannan, I think you’re referring to these tribal allies of them—not the actual Tuatha because (in the earliest descriptions of the Tuatha), their technology and their understanding would’ve been way beyond any other earthly culture that would’ve attempted to make war on them.

So part of this alleged defeat is that the Tuatha literally went underground, that they went into the earth. Now, I think: you take out the anthropological part of the human tribal/cultural allies of the Tuatha—they were the ones who were probably defeated by other tribes. But it’s possible that the part of the Tuatha going underground is the otherworldly Tuatha, and what would that suggest?

That could mean (this is all hypothetical) that they’re the ones that knew, discovered, found, and established themselves in habitable regions—either under the surface of the earth, or possibly even under the seas because we have the whole issue of things coming up out of the ocean for ages. Remember: we’re talking about a civilization technologically advanced.

So, if there are these habitable zones—vast hollow spots, hollow places under the outer surface of the planet. This is theoretically where these Tuatha would’ve set up, and they can come and go as they please. It’s possible (according to what my dad said and what he was told, and others—he’s not the only one who ever said this), that during some cataclysm on the surface of the earth, surface humans were brought down there for their safety. and continue to be down there.

That could be the so-called civilization that my dad was referring to in what he told, [as well as] others who have encountered subterranean civilizations through the years—that could be who and what they’re encountering.”

In his book, Walter also presents his research into the possibility that what occurred at Roswell has a more Earthly (but no-less astonishing) explanation: could what crashed in the desert in New Mexico have been secret Nazi technology? We go over some of the information Walter gathered that points to Nazi Germany as being the source for the craft, and (if true) how this revelation alone could’ve been enough to implement a cover-up and keep it classified at the highest level.

Speaking of possible secret Nazi projects—two popular subjects of discussion are the possibility that the Nazis had developed a saucer-shape craft called the Haunebu, and a mysterious bell-shaped device referred to as Die Glocke. However, Walter is quick to point out the following:

“Here’s the problem with the Haunebu thing: unfortunately, it’s a myth. When you look close enough at it, you find that it’s all a post-war myth. The closest that they could’ve gotten to anything like the Haunebu was the technology of whatever Die Glocke actually was at the point of the development that they reached during the war and by the end of the war.

I do not think that they ever got anywhere near a saucer. I don’t believe the story that they captured an ET saucer before the war, or during the war. It’s all part of the post-war Nazi survival myth. It can be traced back to guys like Ernst Zündel and a couple of very questionable post-war articles in Italian newspapers in the 50’s.

But Die Glocke was very likely a real thing that they were developing, and had developed to a certain point, and I think that—whatever Die Glocke actually was developed to by the end of the war, I definitely think the United States continued the development of that technology with our Paperclip Germans. For example, by the time you get to 1965, I think the Kecksburg UFO may be evidence of how far we had developed this Nazi bell/Die Glocke technology.”

But the enigma of Roswell and what could’ve been does not stop there: Walter’s research uncovers a possible link between this event and one of the founding members of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Jack Parsons—who in addition to being a gifted rocket engineer and chemist, was a Thelemite occultist and protégé of Aleister Crowley. It would appear that a possible explanation for the Roswell Incident (and the subsequent wave of UFO sightings in the United States) may have had something to do with Parsons’ occult practices—specifically, a series of rituals he performed along side future Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, in the Mojave Desert from December 1945 through March 1946 called the Babalon Working.

Speaking on Jack Parsons and his Babalon Working rituals, Walter says:

“The story is that the had done a working out in the desert and he, according to the story, believed that that working opened up a hole to another dimension (kind of pierced or lifted the vail), and what crashed at Roswell had come from the other side. He apparently believed this and told US military agents that that was the case.

This is what Parsons believed explained Roswell. Well, if you’re talking about opening up the veil and beings from another dimension coming—that could be from the same dimension, for example, the aforementioned and discussed Tuatha Dé Dannan came from. That’s where we get into this whole ultra-terrestrials thing as a possibility.”

Rounding off these extraordinary possibilities that could explain the Roswell crash (and the particular event Walter’s father was involved in), we take a look at the MKULTRA program. While it is now common knowledge amongst students and researchers of fringe topics and conspiracies, that the CIA was conducting (at times illegal) experiments on subjects using MKULTRA techniques. Little is know about the interest the US Air Force had in this project, and how far they went with their experiments—but Walter makes a strong case for his father (a USAF serviceman at the time of the events in question), being subjected to MKULTRA procedures.

On the subject of the MKULTRA program, and how it relates to his father’s story, Walter says:

“I also found evidence that compelled me to present the possibility that something he was involved with was deeply classified, and that the story he told may have been kind of a false narrative overlaid in his psyche through hypnosis, to suppress what he really worked on. This is all based on actual psychiatric technology and methodology that had been developed under the MKULTRA Program.

I learned all sorts of interesting truths about how the Air Force was really keen on MKULTRA during the time my dad was in. Looking at it from that angle opened my eyes to things that I didn’t realize were connected with the period of time my dad was in—the context of his story and such. And yet, even though that whole possibility would seem to explain away this story of underground people, this hidden civilization—even though the psychiatric part could explain all that away.

In my own research on other things, there is a thread of evidence to suggest that there really has been this other group of people, if not a full-blown civilization co-existing with us on the planet. In the book, I tell reasonably that my dad may very well have been exposed to MKULTRA techniques and why, I present all the documented history as to why that’s possible, and I can also offer a legitimate alternative to the ET hypothesis as Roswell is concerned based on the actual context of the history going on.”

For more of Walter’s incredible insight into these topics, including a very interesting answer to a question regarding a footnote in his book in which he mentions being taught “certain skills in occult sciences” for use in his work by his mentor whom he only identifies by the alias ‘Col. Lundy’, check out the full interview in the YouTube link at the top of this page. Don’t forget to grab a copy Shimmering Light, and check out Lulu.com for Walter’s other titles.
